OLD NEWS: Since June 2021, it’s been permissible by NCAA Rules for student athletes to get an agent, and to be paid for the commercial use of their Name, Image and Likeness – to profit from publicity related to their performance.

TODAY; The NIL money is flowing. But athletes should be aware, it brings financial reporting and tax implications – for the athletes and their parents – that’s a whole new world.

Ohio State linebacker Jack Sawyer, pictured above in 2023 with Rick Ricart of Ricart Automotive, is one of seven OSU football players from the 2023 season who received the use of vehicles from Ricart in payment for appearing in TV commercials and at charitable events for the auto dealer.  Sawyer’s custom Ford 150 truck comes with his No. 33 jersey number in a Superman logo on the hood. Such NIL compensation can incur tax liabilities for the student-athlete.
